alzyck > 7/18/2008 - This is the Jackson Elementary playground at the start of the event. When we arrived at 8 a.m., the holes had been dug and the main support poles placed in the holes, but not concreted in. The playground parts that connected to the poles was laid out on the grassy area (soccer field) on the left waiting for the volunteers to put it together.
alzyck > 7/18/2008 - Sarah had given Pam a notice about the playground event to put up at work. When Pam put it up, one of the guys that works there (Eric), who is a Sergent in the National Guard, said he would bring his guys to help. They made quite a positive impression. The kids loved the Humvee's and the guys worked hard. When I was in the Army in the early 70's, as a result of the politics associated with the Vietnam war, the general public treated soldiers with disdain and disrespect. I was very impressed with the respect everyone had for these guys. They deserve it. I believe almost all of them have been to Iraq. Tough job with lots of sacrifices. Go Army!
alzyck > 7/18/2008 - Here comes the Airborne. Hmmm. Who's that at the far end of the walkway?
alzyck > 7/18/2008 - Preparing to build the frame for the playground.
alzyck > 7/18/2008 - Here is the playground as it was being assembled. The woman with the dark hair and light blue shirt on the left is the Jackson Principal.
alzyck > 7/18/2008 - Additional work assembling the gym. The most two most labor intensive tasks were moving mulch and hand mixing/moving concrete.
alzyck > 7/18/2008 - This is a sign on the fence at the playground.
alzyck > 7/18/2008 - It wasn't just the playground. This area on the East side of the school was planted and a mural was painted on the steps.
alzyck > 7/18/2008 - This is the registration area where volunteers signed in.
